Cakes In Traditional Weddings; A Subtle Cultural Imperialism

I am a lover of cakes. I love the way they stand so exotic. I also love and respect what a cake stands for and represent. I only do not love and subscribe to the sudden adoption of cakes to our Nigerian traditional weddings. Looking at the event of a traditional wedding, I think a cake is a total contradiction. The cake being of the Greek origin incorporated into our traditional I would say is a first-hand infilteration of our culture and traditions. Today in Nigeria we point to so many ills in our society and link them to one culture imperialism or the other,, we blame it on our fathers who in their 'time' accepted and copied everything so absentmindly and shortsighted. But today in our 'time' we are also letting history repeat itself. And one disheartening thing about it is that we claim to be in the civilized time. We are supposed to know more. If our Father's had an excuse for their mistake what could we give us our excuse. My point is this a traditional we

Phrases A Smart Person Would Avoid

So many times we want to compliment someone, show concern or encourage, we end up not being successful at it because they are misinterpreted. And then other times we feel the message is done and achieved where as the person has taken that 'compliment'or 'word of encouragement ' against you.  You wouldn't know it was also misinterpreted because he keeps it to himself.  But either ways,  whether you are aware or not,  you have been misinterpreted. It's not because our intentions were wrong. Of course not! It's most times because we want to say the right things but lack the sensitivity behind the words we use. We’ve all said things that people interpreted much differently than we thought they would. Verbal slip-ups often occur because we say things without knowledge of the subtle implications they carry. Understanding these implications requires social awareness —the ability to pick up on the emotions and experiences of other people. We should be aware and co

Learn From The Eagle

Eagles are among the most amazing creatures that God created. Solomon himself wrote in Proverbs, "There be three things which be too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not: The way of an eagle in the air..." (Prov. 30:18-19). Eagles are among the largest and most powerful birds in the world. Eagles are wise they are careful to avoid danger, unless they come too close to its nest, and pose a threat to their young. Eagles have been noted as symbols of strength, bravery and courage. Eagles and hawks are said to have the keenest sight of all, and can sight their prey while soaring high in the sky. The Eagle Flies At High Altitude And It Does Not Fly With Other Birds:  This is an amazing principle of the eagle which very few people can cope with. The eagle is not found among sparrows or other smaller birds. The eagles flies in altitude only one kind of bird can fly-the eagle. Never with other birds and never in flocks. What is the lesson here? If you ever want to do som

Mugabe doesn’t sleep at functions – Spokesman

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, 93, is not asleep when he closes his eyes for long periods in public events but is resting his eyes from bright lights, his spokesman said Thursday. Mugabe has regularly had his eyes closed at recent appearances, including when he appeared on a discussion panel at last week’s World Economic Forum meeting in South Africa. “I feel like a failure when there is this reading that the President is sleeping in conferences, no,” his spokesman George Charamba was quoted as saying in the state-run Herald newspaper. “At 93, there is something that happens to the eyes and the President cannot suffer bright lights. If you look at his poise, he looks down, avoids direct lighting.” Charamba compared Mugabe to Nelson Mandela, whose eyes were sensitive to flash photography after years of working in a limestone quarry when he was imprisoned on Robben Island. “You were not allowed to even use flashes whenever he was in the room,” he said.
